Protecting Your Hardwood Floors from Scratches

Protecting Your Hardwood Floors from Scratches

From time to time, your hardwood floors are bound to get dinged up.

From time to time, your hardwood floors are bound to get dinged up. This can be for several reasons, from a summertime party to your pets’ nails being too long. However, moving furniture around can also do a number on your hardwood floors. Let’s take a look at how to protect them.

Clean the Floors

One of the first things you should do is clean your hardwood floors. When you do, you can find smaller bits of dust and debris that you might not have noticed before. Most of the time, these little pests get stuck underneath your couch or other pieces of heavy furniture, such as a bookcase, and you forget that they are there. Sweep the floors and use the vacuum if you can, but be careful not to leave any signs of damage behind, even if you do it by accident.

Go Slowly

Next, do whatever you’re going to do as slowly and carefully as you go. Rushing through the process of moving your furniture won’t do much help if you drop something and leave a significant dent or drag mark on the floor. Watch the padding, and if something slips, you will have to stop and attend to the scratch. At least by doing this, you can keep the scratch under control and rub it out before it becomes too noticeable.

Don’t Be a Drag

Dragging your furniture across the floor is a terrible idea. It doesn’t matter whether you are moving an extra chair over to the dinner table or if you need to scoot the coffee table out of the way so you can vacuum the rug underneath it. Don’t drag your furniture across your hardwood floors. Sliding it can also be a bad idea, so you will want to make sure that you have some cushions or another padding to reduce the damage.

Make it Lighter

In some cases, it will be easier to move your furniture if you can find a way to make it lighter than it was. Take the drawers out of the dresser, empty the fridge, and put away books and other decorations from your shelves. Any unnecessary weight will make the entire process that much more difficult.
