How to Care for Refinished Hardwood Flooring

Imagine if you will that you spent your weekend refinishing your hardwood flooring. Or you’re about to do that this weekend after promising your spouse you would do it for months on end. Either way, here are some useful tips for how to take care of a recently refinished hardwood flooring.

Imagine if you will that you spent your weekend refinishing your hardwood flooring. Or you’re about to do that this weekend after promising your spouse you would do it for months on end. Either way, here are some useful tips for how to take care of a recently refinished hardwood flooring.

Keep the Room Warm

With the weather cooling down, keeping your home warm shouldn’t be a problem. But while the fresh coat of finish is still drying, it is more vulnerable to damage than once it has fully dried off. So in the meantime, keep the room where you worked on the hardwood flooring as warm as you can. This means that temperature wise, the setting should be between 68 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. You need to keep it on this setting for a full week. If you plan on resanding your hardwood floors, then you need to have this temperature setting in place for at least a day before you get started.

Dry Off the Floors

When it comes to refinished hardwood flooring, moisture is the enemy. That means you need to make sure your floors are dry, but not too dry.

One way to do this is to increase the ventilation in the room. Not only will this help dry off the floors faster, but it will also help get rid of the smell of the finishing solution. Open as many doors and windows as you can without actually going inside. But you should stay close to home because you should only leave the doors and windows open for up to half an hour. The next day, go inside and open up every door and window for at least half an hour, and an hour at most.

Don’t Put in Furniture

After the last coat of finish is on the wood flooring, wait another day to put furniture into the room. Don’t drag the furniture across the floor, either. This will prevent the chances of streaks or scratches. You can cover the floor with blankets or towels to protect the refinished hardwood flooring; especially if what you need to move back in is so heavy you can’t lift it easily.
