Preparing for Hardwood Floor Installation

hardwood floor installation

Prepare your room for a new hardwood floor installation to ensure a smooth transition.

Now that you have selected the perfect new hardwood floor for your home, you might think the hard part is done! Unfortunately, that isn’t quite the case. In order to ensure the best quality installation possible, preparing for your hardwood floor installation is an important part of the process. Here are some steps you can take to make sure that your hardwood floor installation is a breeze.

Dust Busting

Dust is the biggest obstacle between you and a great hardwood floor installation. The dust that gets kicked up and created during the installation can be a huge pain to clean up afterward, so take care to seal off any rooms that won’t be undergoing installation beforehand. Cover doorways with clear plastic sheeting and painter’s tape to make a good seal that sawdust won’t be able to penetrate.

Remove Any Doors in the Way

While your hardwood floor installation company may offer to do this, there is nothing wrong with speeding up the process and doing it yourself. Carefully remove all of the doors that are in the installation area and stack them with blankets in between to protect the wood and doorknobs or fixtures. Store the doors in one of the sealed off rooms to protect them from dust and debris.

Get Rid of Baseboards

Removing your baseboards is another way to smooth over the installation process. You can reinstall your baseboards after the hardwood flooring installation is over. This is an especially good option if you were looking to replace or refresh your baseboards soon anyways. Even if you weren’t originally thinking about it, replacing your flooring and your baseboards is an even bigger way to give your room a facelift.

Prepare Your Subfloor

Do you know what your substrate is? Does your installation package include subflooring? Find out these beforehand and if they aren’t included, take the time to prepare your subfloor in advance. Many companies will move right past any flaws in the subflooring to finish their portion of the job, leaving you with beautiful flooring installed over a sub-par subfloor.
