This means that you can enjoy both the rich luxuriousness of hickory, cherry, walnut, oak, maple, ash, and any other type of rich hardwood floor, while getting all of the benefits of radiant heating. Read on to learn more about radiant heating installation possibilities and your hardwood floors.
Hardwood Floors For Home Renovations
In this case, direct installation beneath hardwood floors in possible. Radiant heat tubing is installed directly under a wood subfloor from the underside. Foil product or traditional fiberglass is used to provide added insulation.
A Plywood Underlayment System
The installation of radiant heat tubing within a plywood underlayment system is another option. This is done either over an already existing slab of concrete or directly over a current wood subfloor. In damp areas it is highly recommended to incorporate the traditional closed-cell foam insulation which has been developed especially for such areas.
For New Constructions
In the case of an entirely new construction, there is another method which is often used. Radiant heat tubing will be embedded within a concrete slab while pouring concrete.
Choose Wood Carefully
The choice of wood type is quite important. This becomes very apparent once you know the impacts that different options can have on a project and your overall home. Boards are cut from logs in two ways: Quarter-sawn and plain-sawn. Plain-sawn wood has horizontal grains, and upon exposure to temperature fluctuations expand from side to side. This will lead to cupping and gaps. Quarter-sawn wood has vertical grains, which means they expand from top to bottom, which makes cupping and gaps less likely. Choosing this type of wood is a wiser idea for your hardwood floors overall.
