Common Myths About Hardwood Floors

Common Myths About Hardwood Floors

Like many other things, hardwood floors have persistent myths about them. Even if there is a tiny bit of truth attached to these myths, there’s a reason why they are considered myths.

Like many other things, hardwood floors have persistent myths about them. Even if there is a tiny bit of truth attached to these myths, there’s a reason why they are considered myths. For instance, there is the misconception that the shininess of the floor is commensurate with how durable it is. What are some other myths about hardwood? Let’s find out together.

Shine = Durable

Let’s start with one of the most enduring myths. When a hardwood floor is shiny, it looks gorgeous, and that is a fact. Several different additives increase the aesthetic appeal of your hardwood floors, but that doesn’t mean it is any more durable than before or floors that aren’t as shiny. These additives are gloss, semi-gloss, satin, and matte. They do have a protective effect, but it isn’t all that much.

Polyurethane

A second myth has to do with polyurethane. Adding some polyurethane to your floors makes it look glossier, and that much is true. Even so, it doesn’t make your floors more durable than if it didn’t have this material. Instead, give some thought to sealants, paint, and stains, all of which protect the floors in their own ways. Ultimately, durability comes down to how hard the wood is. That’s why it’s so important to refer back to the Janka hardness rating scale.

Glossiness and Sheen

Another myth that won’t go away has to do with glossiness and sheen. The top layer of your hardwood floors is what determines how glossy it is. Part of the reason why the myths are so persistent is that homeowners simply don’t know as much as they should about the process of how hardwood floors are produced in the first place. The steps include manufacture, installation, and refinishing throughout the years that hardwood floors are expected to serve you and your home.

Polishes and Sheens

When it comes to sheen levels of your floors, simply adding more gloss won’t make any difference. While satin and matte polishes aren’t as shiny as their counterparts, but that doesn’t make them less beautiful. Do what you can to have a beautiful floor that will last for years or decades!
