4 Things to Keep in Mind When Shopping for Wood Floors

Wood floors look beautiful, and with the right care and attention, can last you years or even decades.

Let’s say that you are in the market for some new flooring. You deserve the best, and so does your home! Wood floors look beautiful, and with the right care and attention, can last you years or even decades. That said, you’ve got plenty of decisions to make along the way. So what are some of the things that you should look for when choosing your wood flooring? Let’s talk about it.

Spot the Differences

Before you make any decisions, you’ve got to do your homework first. There are many different species, but they all fall into two categories: solid hardwood and engineered hardwood. You’ll also find that different styles, colors, and finishes are available for you to choose from.

Comparing Solid and Engineered

As we mentioned, there are two types of hardwood: solid and engineered. Solid hardwood is made of solid wood all the way through; it can last for decades in its long lifetime. The best attribute of solid hardwood is that it can take multiple rounds of refinishing. What this means is that you can alter the feel and finish of the wood any time that you want to do it! Meanwhile, let’s talk about engineered hardwood for a minute. There is a wear layer that mimics the look of solid hardwood. Engineered wood is more resistant to temperature and moisture fluctuations.

Focus on the Finish

Another tip we have for you is to focus on the finish of the wood floors. Raw wood can be purchased unfinished before installation. Then you can add a layer of stain and finish. However, it’s more efficient to choose prefinished hardwood flooring, since you have a variety of color options as well.

Think About the Texture

Lastly, take some time to think about the texture of the wood floors you bring into your home. Do you prefer smooth or handscraped? There’s also distressed wood and wire brushing. Wire brushing creates a very particular effect: it provides a matte textured surface. Now that you know the aesthetic choices you have before you, you must assess what condition your current floors are in. Uneven floors will make installation much harder than it needs to be.
