What Wood Flooring Do You Want to Have?

What Wood Flooring Do You Want to Have?

There are many different varieties of wood flooring that you can have installed in your home.

Getting the best hardwood floors can go a long way towards making your home feel brand new again. There are many different varieties of wood flooring that you can have installed in your home. We must caution you against attempting to do it on your own; while this is technically possible, the process will go much smoother if you leave it in the hands of the professionals.

Unfinished vs. Finished

The first choice you will have to make involves unfinished floors or finished floors. If you wish to add another layer of stain, then you should probably take unfinished floors. This is also a good approach for if you want to match the new wood flooring to any existing floorboards that are already in place. Finishes are meant to help seal and protect the floors against moisture damage and other types of harm that could ruin your floors. Another reason to choose unfinished flooring is when you want to have hardwood floors installed in your kitchen. The finish can get into all the nooks, crannies, and crevices between the planks of your floorboards. When you choose prefinished flooring, it is all ready to go. You won’t have to deal with foul odors or VOCs.

Solid vs. Engineered

The next choice you have to make is whether you want solid wood floors or engineered ones instead. When you choose solid wood floors, all of them are made of wood. It withstands sanding and refinishing many times over, but one major drawback is that they are particularly susceptible to moisture damage. What this means is that they are not a smart choice for basement or garage installation.

Engineered hardwood is slightly different. Wood is glued to several layers of other types of wood that are not as sturdy, such as plywood. It’s incredibly stable and is well-suited to basement settings. Sadly, it can only take sanding and refinishing one time during all the years that the floors are in place.

Choosing the Right Species

Selecting the right species for your new wood floors doesn’t need to be an ordeal. Oak, maple, and cherry are all good ideas. If those don’t appeal to you, then you can also consider bamboo, walnut, ash, and mahogany.
