Is It Time to Refinish Your Wood Flooring?

Is It Time to Refinish Your Wood Flooring?

One of the best ways to make sure that your wood flooring lasts is to apply the right coat of finish when it needs it most.

One of the best ways to make sure that your wood flooring lasts is to apply the right coat of finish when it needs it most. Whether it is due to the heat, humidity, or excessive sunlight, the summer can ruin your wood floors. Here are some things to think about if you’re looking to get some work done on your floors to restore their beauty before your next gathering.

The Process

One thing that all homeowners should know when it comes to refinishing is that there is a limit. The refinishing treatment can restore the way your hardwood floors looked, but after a while, even that effect will begin to wear off. Some of the wood needs to be sanded or scraped off, which can take a toll on the quality of the wood. Eventually, the wood will get so thin that the boards won’t fit together anymore. This means that you can only refinish your wood floors a total of five times.

Potential Water Damage

Another reason why refinishing your floors is so useful is if it has been damaged recently. However, this only seems to apply to physical damages. Waterlogged wood is much weaker than it normally would. In the event of water damage, you are better off replacing the floors or only replacing the parts that are too damaged by moisture to be safe anymore.

You Changed Your Mind

Let’s say that the color of your hardwood floors no longer appeals to you. In this case, refinishing the floors is a quick and convenient way to change their appearance without too much upheaval. If you want to change the size of the planks or you want to run your wood floors in a different direction, well, in that case, you would need to replace them.

You Want Different Wood

There are many different types of wood available for wood floors. Not only are there hundreds of different species, but different cuts, colors, and thicknesses too. Consider the Janka hardness scale: it can show you how sturdy and durable the wood you want is. Eventually oak might give way to laminate or bamboo, but that day doesn’t have to be today.

The Floors are Aging

One last consideration is the age of your wood floors. Wood will decay eventually, and you don’t want your floors to be too soft due to rot. But once the floorboards are too loose or creaky, it’s time to replace them.
