Installing Hardwood Floors on Staircases

Installing Hardwood Floors on Staircases

Believe it or not, it is possible to install hardwood on your staircase!

Believe it or not, it is possible to install hardwood on your staircase! You might have to use a runner to help make it less slippery, but even so, this is an interior design choice you shouldn’t hesitate about making. Read on to find out more

Choosing the Correct Size

The first step is to make sure your planks are the correct size. Since every step will be slightly larger or smaller than the others, this is something you can’t afford to overlook. This means you will have to think about treads, risers, balustrades, and other necessary components that ensure the safety and stability of your new staircase. What is the length and width of each plank of wood? The answer to this question will affect every plan you make when it comes to completing this project

Another reason to take all of these factors into account arises when all of the steps aren’t the same height. If they were all the same height, then they probably wouldn’t make for a very effective set of stairs! To fix this, give the tallest riser a slight boost: about 3 ⁄ 4ths of an inch should suffice. Another mistake to avoid? When you make the planks too short. Although this situation might seem inconsequential at first, if this happens you will need to scrap what you’ve done and start fresh

Deploying Risers

So now let’s turn our attention to the risers attached to the hardwood planks. The tread is as the name implies, where you step and walk as you ascend or descend the stairs. Many staircases are furnished with carpet instead of bare wood, but the principle remains the same. The riser is where two separate stairs meet and overlap. You need to have properly aligned risers to make sure that the stairs aren’t crooked or rickety.

Don’t Forget the Balustrade!

You can’t forget about the balustrade of the stairs, either. You might be wondering what that is and why it matters so much. Well, to put it simply, it is the final piece of the puzzle. However, the main issue here is that it is beyond the skills of any DIY homeowner. For this reason, we suggest you call the professionals, such as the team at JKE Hardwood Flooring, for assistance!
