Deep Cleaning Your Hardwood Floors

deep cleaning

Deep cleaning your hardwood floors will help them last for a long time!

If you want to ensure your hardwood floors last for a long time, you will need to keep them squeaky clean. You can maintain your floors with simple daily routines, but every so often you’ll need to deep clean them if you want to keep them looking brand new. Once every month or so, follow these steps for deep cleaning your hardwood floor.

Preparation for Deep Cleaning

To prepare your floors for some deep cleaning, place mats both on the outside and inside of the exterior doors. This will minimize the amount of dirt carried in from outside. If it is raining or snowing, have a boot removal area to protect against water and salt damage. Finally, use protectors under furniture and rugs in play areas with children’s toys to protect the floor against scratches.

Time to Get Clean – Sweeping Up Dust

First, sweep the floor thoroughly using a soft bristled broom. Take care to not miss a spot. Next, you’ll use the floor brush attachment of your vacuum cleaner to remove dirt from harder to reach places on your floor. Use this attachment to clean dirt from corners and nooks in your floor. Using one with a beater-bar attachment, however, is not advised as it could damage your floor finish.

Scrubbing the Floor

Next, you will need a concentrated hardwood floor cleaner. Dilute the cleaner according to the instructions on the bottle, dip your mop into it, and wring the mop out so that it is only slightly damp. Mop the floor gently but thoroughly with it, taking care to ensure that water does not collect in any one spot on the floor. If you are deep cleaning your floor during a period of humid weather, use a ceiling fan or an air conditioner to speed the drying process. Check for stains and remove them with a stain remover sprayed on a piece of cloth, if necessary. Finally, if your floor is suited for it, you can finish your deep cleaning by waxing and buffing.
