The Beginner’s Guide to Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring is incredibly durable and beautiful. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you enter the world of hardwood flooring.

Hardwood flooring is incredibly durable and beautiful. It is a stunning addition to almost any room, with a variety of colors and grain patterns available that can accent any decor. But when you’re planning your hardwood flooring, remember that it should complement the room not overpower it. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you enter the world of hardwood flooring.

Rooms Where Hardwood is Great

Hardwood is a beautiful addition to most rooms. It can be a luxurious and romantic addition to your master suite, a calming accent to your den, or a professional aesthetic for your home office. Hardwood is also a fantastic choice for both living rooms and dining rooms since you can choose from various colors and patterns to set just the right mood.

Rooms That Need Different Flooring

Not all rooms are equal, and some rooms really shouldn’t have hardwood. The bathroom is almost never the place to install it. Some hardwoods are incredibly durable, but the bathroom floor sees daily water. Water that drips down the current or overruns the tub and sits on the wood will damage it. Likewise, the laundry room is full of wet towels, grimy, dirty, oily clothes, and spilled water and detergent. It is another room where you should forego hardwood. Hardwood flooring is an investment, so don’t add it to a room where it will undoubtedly get destroyed by moisture.

Hardwood and Pets

Hardwood flooring is very durable, but it’s not immune to damage. The most likely culprits for normal damage are household pets but don’t throw out the pets or the floors. Keeping your pets’ nails trimmed (yes, even the cat’s) is the best way to prevent them from scratching up your floors as they run and play. When they’re asleep, there’s still the possibility that they could scratch or even bite your floors. Get them each their own bed that is big enough for their whole body. Train them to sleep there, instead of on your floors.

Fixing Scratches

Sometimes, despite your best efforts, scratches happen to your hardwood floors. Scratches are easily fixed with wood staining markers. Choose a color that closely matches your floor and check it with a spot test. Rub the color into the scratches with a rag that is soaked in mineral spirits and work the color in until it’s even.
