Avoiding Scratches in Your Hardwood Floor

Avoiding Scratches in Your Hardwood Floor

Check out this guide for preventing scratches on your hardwood floor and caring for the defects that do happen.

Your hardwood floor is beautiful and durable and brings more sophistication and style into every room. Now that you’ve chosen the perfect style and stain to accentuate your home, furniture, and appliances, you want to do everything you can to maintain that beauty. With that in mind, you’ll seek to avoid scratches in every way possible. As you move around in your home, some scratches will be inevitable, but you can avoid deeper gouges that will require much more repair. Check out this guide for preventing scratches on your floors and caring for the defects that do happen.

Prevention

To keep your hardwood floor shining and smooth, there are some preventative measures you can take so that you aren’t trying to remove scratches some other time. It’s inevitable that furniture will slide across the smooth floors, but you can keep them from leaving marks by applying felt pads on the bottom of the legs. Do your best to avoid dragging furniture and instead, lift and set them into position. Also, don’t wear stilettos and other spiked shoes on the floor. The points on the shoes, plus the body weight associated with them will leave scratches and gouges. These marks will be deep and difficult to repair. Have guests take their shoes off or put down mats and area rugs to protect as much of the hardwood floor as possible.

Caring for Scratches

It’s almost impossible to completely avoid having scratches on your hardwood floors. When you do see those unsightly blemishes, there are many ways you can restore them to their original look. Shoes and furniture aren’t the only things that will leave a mark, so will pets and bags. Prefinished hardwood care kits often come with wax sticks. You can also apply a matching finish on small scratches by using a cotton swab. For larger and deeper defects, it’s best to go with a professional service. They’ll have the tools and equipment necessary to refinish the surface or even possibly replace the damaged boards.
