Matching New Flooring to Existing Hardwood

matching

To match or not to match? Your unique situation may determine whether matching hardwood flooring is a good idea or not.

Hardwood flooring is a great upgrade for a home. Not only does it look nice but it also adds guaranteed value to your home. Most designers agree that hardwood throughout the home is preferable to having it in only a few rooms. So if your home already has hardwood flooring in a couple of rooms and you’re looking to expand it to new areas, it may be a challenge to try and match new flooring to your existing flooring. This is particularly an area of concern if your existing floor was installed years ago. You do have a couple of options if you’re in this predicament – not matching, or matching the floors.

Non-Matching Floors

With the wide variety of different hardwood flooring options out there, you may be able to lay a style for your new floor that contrasts well with your existing floor. This can create a visually appealing transition, especially in spaces where a narrow walkway or door separates the two rooms. A professional hardwood flooring expert or interior designer can help you choose a nice contrasting color to go with your existing flooring.

Matching Floors

If you don’t want to go this route and want to try and match the floors together, this may be possible with the help of an experienced hardwood flooring expert. They can take a look at what you have and give you suggestions based on the wood species, cut, grading, and finish to try and match the floors. You may also be able to transfer flooring from a less important room in your home to the new room to create an exact match.

Rip It Up and Start Again

If neither of these matching options sounds appealing, the last option you might consider is ripping up all of the old flooring to start anew with brand new flooring. This is the most dramatic option and should not be taken lightly, especially for homes with historic hardwood flooring. But if you’re not particularly attached to your old floors, this option might make more sense and save some hassle over trying to match or contrast floors.
