Adding Rugs to Your Refinished Hardwood

Adding Rugs to Your Refinished Hardwood

Now that you’ve refinished your hardwood flooring, you probably have some other questions on your mind. For instance, how long do you have to wait before you can start putting rugs and furniture back onto your floors?

Now that you’ve refinished your hardwood flooring, you probably have some other questions on your mind. For instance, how long do you have to wait before you can start putting rugs and furniture back onto your floors? We’re glad you asked because it’s time to find out more.

First Things First

First things first, make sure your floors are clean and dry. Different refinishing agents will dry off at different rates. For instance, urethane will be dry by the next day. Provided that your house isn’t too humid or too hot, you should be able to put rugs down once the urethane is fully dry.

But if you put oil down on your hardwood, you’ll have to wait longer than that. The reason for this is that you’ll want to be sure that all of the oil has absorbed into the wood before doing anything. Did you use some varnish? If you did, give it a few days to finish drying off; it could be as soon as three days later, but sometimes you’ll have to wait five days. If it takes longer than that, you should still wait.

What’s Next

Think about the conditions inside your home, because as we noted, humidity levels and moisture will affect how quickly your refinished hardwood dries off. Colder temperatures will make the refinishing solution take longer to set, but hotter temperatures will accelerate the entire process.

Waiting for Wax

If you used wax while refinishing your hardwood, then you will have to wait even longer to put down your rugs. Once the wax is set, give it another day or two before you start unrolling the rugs, because you don’t want the rug to get stuck.

Using Oriental Rugs

Are you planning on using Oriental rugs in the same room as the refinished hardwood? If you are, that’s great. But as always, some caution is advised, especially if you aren’t putting pads between the rug and the floor. To make sure nothing ruins your priceless rugs, wait two weeks before you start to put them down in the room.

Putting Down Pads

We mentioned above that using pads is a good idea since they can form a barrier between the refinished hardwood and your rugs. At the same time, though, you need to recognize what the pads are made of; synthetic pads aren’t the best to use on petroleum finish or oil. Check and see if you have the right kind of pad for the rug you want to use.
