Is Your Hardwood Flooring Covered in Road Salt?
March is almost over. Even though the vernal equinox has come and gone, it still doesn’t feel like spring has officially started. That might have something to do with all the snow on the ground. After you’ve spent hours digging your car out from under the piles of snow, your shoes might be covered in road salt. So what do you do when you track it inside onto your hardwood flooring? Let’s find out.
Use the Vacuum
Although this might sound like a strange tip, hear us out. When you run the vacuum, you can grab any bits of salt left on the ground that you might not have seen before. Along with the road salt, you can also clean up any dirt that tagged along with it. In a few minutes, your hardwood floors will begin to shine again. The longer a hardwood floor is wet, however, the higher its chances of being irreparably damaged. Use a clean and dry towel or a mop with a microfiber head to clear away the moisture.
Mix Some Vinegar
Vinegar is also useful. But, as we mentioned a few weeks ago, don’t mix the vinegar with hydrogen peroxide. Instead, combine it in a gallon-sized bucket with some warm water. Once you have the mix ready, start adding it to a spray bottle. Keep the spray bottle refilled as needed for this next step in the process.
Spray and Mop
Find where the road salt has settled on your hardwood flooring. Chances are it’ll be close to a door, either in the front or back of your home. Use the spray bottle to make the affected area damp, but you don’t want to overdo it. Once you are done spraying, leave it alone for a few minutes to let the mixture break down the salt. Then you will want to dry off the floor to prevent any lasting damage.
Dry It Off
Again, the mop and towel should come in handy here. A rag covered in water will also help remove any bits of salt you might have missed during the first application. Get another dry towel and wipe the whole area down to ensure it gets dried off more quickly than just allow it to air-dry.
