Preventing the Most Common Problems with Hardwood Flooring

Your new hardwood flooring will need plenty of love!

When you choose hardwood flooring for your home, you’re investing. So it stands to reason that you want your hardwood flooring to last. After all, it enhances the beauty of your home.  But hardwood flooring will need regular maintenance, and you should always keep that in mind. Keep your hardwood floors looking great by preventing these problems before they become huge issues.

Dents

During the installation process, some denting is to be expected. The dents will form while the flooring is still new and vulnerable. Using lower-quality wood may result in more dents. Then again, dents might be caused by human error, as well. Whether you have taken it upon yourself to do the flooring, or if you’ve hired the experts, pay attention to how well it is done. Artistry is an important quality when working with any wood product, whether it’s a rocking chair, a coffee table, or planks of hardwood flooring.

Shifting Planks

As time passes and seasons change, the planks of your flooring will move. This movement results from the wood expanding and contracting as it responds to changes in heat and humidity. The wider the planks are, the more noticeable the shifting that they undergo. Temperatures will drop as summer becomes fall and autumn turns into winter. Then, temperatures will then climb again as the first spring thaw emerges. When you’re choosing the type of hardwood you want for your planks, remember that this shifting will affect all of them to different degrees.

Stains

If you have chosen solid hardwood, you might be all too familiar with stains. Glossy floors that are shown off in magazines look amazing but can stain easily. You’ll have to take excellent of your solid hardwood floors to prevent any staining. Even if you don’t have solid hardwood floors, your floors still need plenty of love and attention. Clean them and polish them whenever you find signs of staining.

Oxidation

Sun damage is a frequent problem in the summer when there’s an abundance of sunshine every day. But sunlight causes another problem for your hardwood floors. Namely, this issue is oxidation. Oxidation occurs when sunlight hits the hardwood and slowly turns it darker. Much like your skin gets darker when it gets a tan, the same thing will happen to your wood flooring.
