Your Family and Hardwood Flooring

How should you choose hardwood flooring for your family? Here are some factors to consider!

Hardwood flooring is both gorgeous and durable. Even if they get a little bit damaged, you can get rid of those nicks and scratches through the processes of resanding and refinishing throughout the years. The hardwood flooring is that tough! How should you choose hardwood flooring for your family? Here are some factors to consider

The Durability

Let’s start by talking about durability. Simply put, some species of wood are more durable than others. Hickory, maple, and oak are three of the sturdiest domestic species, while Brazilian walnut and Brazilian cherry qualify in terms of exotic species. Other options include pine, Douglas fir, and American walnut and cherry.

The Style

What style and aesthetics are you going for? That’s a major question to answer. If you’re worried about scratching and denting, then there is a solution for you. That solution: choose woods with a high degree of graining. This means that hickory and red oak could be the right hardwood flooring for your family. If you had white oak before, then it might be time to give red oak a try. Plus, another advantage of hickory is that is has a wider variety of colors than red oak, which is mostly, you know, just red.

Maintenance Factors

You should also be aware that hardwood flooring requires a decent amount of upkeep. That’s why when you have kids and pets, you will want to choose a type of flooring that is relatively low-maintenance compared to its counterparts. One idea is Brazilian walnut, which is more resistant to moisture damage and scratches left behind by your pets.

How Affordable It Is

Affordability is an immense factor in choosing what flooring you should have. In other words, your budget makes a big difference. Oak is incredibly durable and inexpensive at that. Hickory is another choice that will be easier on your wallet. Either way, domestic hardwoods are much cheaper than exotic ones that you could have imported. Putting down area rugs is also a great idea for saving your hardwood floors from spills, stains, and other by-products of a busy and rowdy family life.
