How to Protect Your Wood Floors from Moisture
Hardwood floors are known for their beauty as well as their durability, except perhaps when hardwood floors come into contact with moisture. Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible for homeowners to avoid moisture coming into contact with our wood floors. So how do you protect your hardwood floors from moisture? Read on to find out!
Protecting Your Investment from Moisture
Most homeowners think moisture damage is caused by flooding incidents like overflowing dishwashers, a burst pipe, or even large spills. While this is possible and should be cleaned up right away, moisture problems for your floors can also be traced back to climatic changes in the humidity level in your home. During the summer, your home’s humidity could skyrocket, leaving your floors warped and ruined. To ensure this doesn’t happen to your home, make sure your home is at a reasonable level for the air conditioning and the humidity controls throughout the season. You should also be careful in the winter as the air is dryer and could have the opposite effect as the wood planks pull apart at the seams. Humidity levels should be monitored all year long to ensure your home is right for you and your wood floors.
Watch for Changes in Your Wood Flooring
Since hardwood flooring is made of natural materials, it is only natural your wood flooring will expand and contract. But as your flooring shifts, it is important for you to look for raises and dips in the flooring that could be a sign of cupping. This can be caused by humidity, a leak, or sitting water on the floors. If you notice this occurring in one spot, make sure to investigate in order to save the rest of your flooring. Once you have found and fixed the source, your flooring can be sanded back down to normal. If the cupping has gone on for long periods of time, you may have to replace that area of your flooring.
