There’s a famous short story by Joyce Carol Oates called “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?” Well, when it comes to your home’s wood flooring, you should ask yourself that same question. There are some rooms in your house where even the best wood flooring just doesn’t belong. Keep reading to find out which is which!
Please keep in mind that no matter which room you install wood flooring in, you need to take proper care of it. If you do that, these rooms will stay as beautiful as you expect for as long as you need them to be.
The Living Room: Want to make your living room feel warmer and cozier, perhaps to take advantage of any radiant heating in the room? Then you should install some wood flooring, particularly hardwood. But part of keeping that warmth and coziness intact is to keep it as clean as possible. Set a doormat outside the living room and have everyone wipe off their shoes before they can enter it. In fact, try the house rule of no shoes inside. It may not have been a rule you grew up with, but that doesn’t mean your visitors haven’t!
The Dining Room: The dining room is another ideal place for some traditional wood flooring. Whether your holiday parties are black tie affairs or just family fun time, the hardwood is a good choice for both.
The Rec Room: The rec room, or den, or whatever else you call the room, can be a place to get away from all the noise and activity of your home. Sit back and relax with a book or some quiet conversation, and some classy hardwood floors.
Sadly, there are some other places around your home where wood flooring, or hardwood flooring for that matter, just won’t work out. What rooms are they?
The Bathroom: Water doesn’t play well with wood. Even if you don’t mean to do it, you could spill some water and damage your wood floors beyond repair.
The Laundry Room: The laundry room is another part of your home that is no stranger to water exposure and possible damage. Maybe this isn’t the best place for some hardwood flooring.
The Entrance Hall: As fall inevitably becomes winter, the outside world turns messier. Your guests, kids, and pets will probably bring in mud, snow, rain, and ice, among others. So it’s probably not the right call to use hardwood floors in your entrance hall.
