5 Things to Consider Before Having a Floor Refinished

Before you decide to have your hardwood floor refinished, it’s worth considering these 5 things.

Whether you just moved into a new home with less-than-new hardwood flooring or you have been walking over the same boards for years and you’re feeling a little bored, choosing to have your hardwood flooring refinished is a big decision. Make sure that you make the right choices along the way with these 5 tips for getting your floor refinished.

Don’t Just Flip Open the Phonebook

The contractor or company you choose to refinish your floor is a very important choice, so don’t take it lightly. The tools used in the process can be tricky to use well, and you don’t want workers getting their first crack at it on your home’s floor. Get referrals from friends, neighbors, and don’t be afraid to check online for examples of their previous work and certifications.

See If You Need a Full Refinishing or Not

Not every hardwood floor needs to be totally refinished, especially if there aren’t major chunks taken out of the wood or if the finish is still there in certain parts. A “screen and poly” job removes a light layer of the existing finish and simply applies a new coat of finish to protect the floor. This is less expensive and works just as well if your floor doesn’t have much damage.

What Color Do You Want?

If the hardwood floors in your home weren’t incredibly expensive to install, and if they have a very deep and rich color, the wood is probably stained and not actually that color. If you want a new color without new hardwood flooring, having your floor refinished is a way to do so. Think of whether or not you would like your floor to be re-stained and what color you have in mind.

Book a Room

Not everyone realizes that hardwood flooring installation isn’t exactly a family affair. Plan to completely move out of your home for multiple days, as walking on the finish of your floor will ruin it. Every step of the process doesn’t take a particularly long time, but waiting for a stain and multiple coats of finish to dry can take a while.

Don’t Forget Your Baseboard

During the process, your baseboard will probably get a few chips or stains, so plan on touching up the paint after the floor refinishing process is over (and before hosting guests to show off your beautiful new floor).
